I am attracted to landscape photography because I want to preserve the natural beauty around us and I want to show the public that we have something that is very precious and fragile. As a boy, I grew up in San Bernardino, California in the early 1950's and I remember the area as being very beautiful. We lived in a lovely valley surrounded by big mountains and everyday was sunny and the sky was blue. I remember one day we swam in the ocean, drove through the desert and played in the snow in the mountains and I thought this has got to be the greatest place on earth. Today the sky back home is brown and there are freeways and strip malls everywhere. It is very sad to see what man has done to the landscape and the environment and this is what motivates me to capture the beautiful scenery around me.

Vermont is not entirely immune to this loss of beauty, but it is on a much smaller and slower scale. Many of the beautiful farms and barns are disappearing because the small family farm is being replaced by big corporate farms with steel buildings. On some of these farms, the cows are tied inside the buildings and never go to pasture because this is considered a more efficient method of farming. Beautiful silos are being replaced with huge white plastic bags that sit on the ground.

I hope my work and the work of other photographers makes you stop and think of what we have and how easily we can lose it.

The internet tends to lose quality and my photographs may appear to look soft and fuzzy. My work is sharp and has excellent detail. Please keep this in mind when view my work on the net. If you are interested in a photograph, but concerned with with the internet quality, I can mail you a small corner of the image so that you can see the quality. If you are not satisfied just return the print undamaged within 15 days and I will return your payment.

All my photographs are registered with the Copyright Office. I am selling home, office or museum display only. You have the right to resell the photograph to a third party for home, office or museum display only. You can only copy and reproduce the photograph for the purpose of reselling the photograph for home, office or museum display or to announce an exhibit of the photographs. You are not purchasing commercial rights to the photographs to be sold as stock photography. Maximum penalty for misuse of my copyright is up to $150,000 plus attorney fees.

These prints are made with the Epson 2000p printer, Epson's 200 year inks and Epson paper. Presently this is the longest lasting photographic process available. I only use archival methods and materials for mounting and matting of these photographs. A white border surrounds the print and the print is sign and sometimes numbered in this area. I do not sign the mats.

All prints are hinged with archival tape and not dry mounted. The print can be removed later if you like and the title and signature stay on the print. When I show the mat colors I try to match as close as possible on the net, but sometimes that is not possible. Sometimes I change the mat color from what is used on the net. You can also specify mat colors, for custom matting, if you use Crescent acid free mat numbers. When I use wooden frames I use framers tape on the inside of the frame where the mat comes in contact with the wood to seal the acid in the wood from touching the mat. Acid free materials and archival matting and framing cost more, but they are well worth it in the long run.

If I use the computer to change reality in any way I will put a note below to let you know. Example: If I photograph a beautiful scene and in the distance there is a parked car, I don't consider removing the car changing the reality of the photograph because the car will probably be moved anyway, but if there were a old wrecked car sitting in the scene I wouldn't remove it because that would change the reality of the photograph. I want the viewer to believe they can stand where I made the photograph and see this scene. If the photograph doesn't involve private property I will put a map on the back of the photograph so that if you come to Vermont you can see the landscape you purchased. Hopefully it still exists.

Cilley Hill Road. Underhill VT.

I returned to this road many times, but I never was able to get anything special out of it. Then one morning before work I tried again and I was rewarded for my patience with a beautiful foggy morning. I set up my 4x5 view camera and made several exposures, but the fog was too thick and I wasn't happy. I had just packed up my camera and I was leaving when I noticed that the fog was lifting. I quickly set up my view camera and took one frame with the last sheet of film I had. Well, as luck would have it, the final photograph was over exposed and of poor quality. I saved the chrome for many years and when computers were available I had the photograph scanned and I corrected the quality in Photoshop. The birch tree was really that white and the colors are true. I did raise the flag on the mail box and forgot to lower it when I was finished. I am sure that is in violation of some postal law buried in some postal law book somewhere, but the statute of limitations has run out and now I can tell all.

Washing Pears

My wife and I own a small U-Pick apple and pear orchard in the Lake Champlain Islands and this shows some of the fruits of our labors. I photographed this with soft window light, some overhead house lights and reflectors. What I got was a perfectly ordinary photograph of a bowl of pears. To get the affect of cleanliness I printed the photograph very light and let the highlight wash out.

I did repair one stem of a pear with the computer. I noticed the bad stem when I was shooting, but I was too lazy to go out and get another pear.

These pears are harvested in mid August. and our apples are ready mid September. to late October. Go North on Rt-2 and turn left at the 2 nd. blinking light on the islands. Go to the end of that street and you will come to a T. The orchard is directly in front of you.

I wanted to title the photograph "Eight fat ballerinas in a bowl", but my wife said no.

Barn Doors. Jericho Center VT.

I photographed this barn door in the summer for a poster for the local IBM plant. They liked it because it had patterns that looked like a computer chip. I always like to come back and visit my subjects in a different season or different light. One gray winter day I returned to this old barn and I remade the photograph. I love the patterns and that window on the backside of the barn.

Sap Buckets. Jericho, VT.

This is early March in Vermont and you see these sap buckets all over the state during sugaring season. For the tree to produce a lot of sap you need nights just below freezing and days just above freezing. One year I thought I would try making some maple syrup and tapped my one big sugar maple on my property. My tree is as big as the second tree in this photograph. I hung four buckets and collected the sap. I don't have the fancy boiling equipment so I just used the kitchen stove top. Well it takes about 35 to 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup and you can imagine how dripping wet my kitchen walls were. It was the best maple syrup I ever tasted.

Idle Sugar house

This is an old sugar house in southern Vermont. The photographs was made in late Fall so the sugar house was idle. The fog was just lifting as the sun was coming up.

Morning Mail. Cambridge, VT.

I got up before dawn to find some Fall scenes to photograph and came upon this big sugar maple. When the sun was poking through the fog I took some photographs of this tree, but it needed a human figure. There wasn't anyone around and I was disappointed. Finally I heard a car coming and I decided to flag down the driver and see if he or she would pose at the mailbox. I am used to getting are you crazy looks and if you have a good enough pathetic look strangers will usually pose for you. I stopped the car and as luck would have it the driver was someone I knew and he let me use his son. I took the photograph while the owners of the house, just out of the frame, slept.

Just a few. North Hero, VT

I drove by this beautiful scene and knew I had a beautiful photograph. I drove home and got my wife and had her bring a straw hat and basket. This is your typical summer day on our islands. ...NOT !

The mustard, at least I think it is mustard, was actually that yellow because it was bathed in the last rays of the warm evening sun. The water and hills in the background were made slightly more blue with the computer.

The Old Red Mill. Jericho, VT.

I lived just up the Browns river from this mill and I loved to put on some snowshoes, grab my cameras and photograph the Mill. We call this snow, that sticks to everything, sugar snow. When the temperature is near 32f and there isn't any wind you get this beautiful sugar snow. It doesn't happen often or last long so you have to be ready for it.

One Last Run. Jericho, VT.

This scene is behind the Methodist church and just up the Brown's River from the Old Mill. I just happened upon this scene while on one of my snowshoe walks and shot a couple of frames with my 35 mm. I knew this was a scene for my big 4x5 view camera and rushed home to get it. This scene is completely natural. All I did was yell to the boys to hold still for a 1/2 second exposure. I was thinking of removing that stump in the middle with the computer, but thought that was natural. A slight imperfection makes the scene real. For 1/2 second this was about as good as it gets in New England.

I was driving around the islands looking for photographs for my 2001 calendar I was publishing. and found these horses, but they were in another area grazing. It was a cold gray day and I wasn't getting anything good. I saw this stand of trees and knew if they would go there I would have a good photograph so I got up high in the back of my pick up and waited and waited and waited. Finally they moved exactly where I wanted them and I got my photograph, then they moved on.

Feeding Sheep Underhill, VT

It was a cold windy day when I saw these sheep and barn. I felt the scene needed something more so I knocked on the farmer's door and asked him if he would come out and feed the sheep. He gave me one of those are you crazy looks, but agreed to come out into the cold. The barn is no longer standing.

Waits River, Vermont

It was -10F when I made this photograph. I was using an view camera where you view the image upside down under a black cloth. A difficult and slow process. When I adjusted the camera controls I had to remove my gloves and within a short time my hands hurt from the cold. Just before I was ready to make this exposure someone in the house lit their wood stove and this beautiful smoke came out of the chimney. If I had been there 10 minutes later there wouldn't have been any smoke.

It was a gray boring day to be taking photographs of beautiful Maine when I came upon this scene. I made the photograph through a deep blue filter to give the image a feeling of night time.

Hay Bales. North Hero, VT

I always admired this big beautiful barn along RT.2. I got up before sunrise several

times to photograph the barn, but the light would never cooperate. A cloud would

come along and block the first rays of sunlight. Finally I got a break and made this

photograph. They say that each town in Vermont looses one old barn per year on

average. That is about 250 barns a year.
